Atmospheric CO2 levels linked to changes in human blood chemistry
A new study published in ‘Air Quality, Atmosphere and Health’ suggests that rising atmospheric carbon dioxide levels are causing lasting changes in human blood chemistry. Researchers from the Kids Research Institute Australia, Curtin University, and the Australian National University analyzed over 20 years of health data from approximately 7,000 individuals in the United States between 1999 and 2020.
The findings indicate that as atmospheric CO2 rose from roughly 369 parts per million (ppm) in 2000 to over 420 ppm today, significant biological shifts occurred. Specifically, average serum bicarbonate levels—a marker closely linked to CO2 in the body—increased by about 7% since 1999. Concurrently, average levels of calcium and phosphorus in the blood have decreased.
Scientists expressed concern that these biological trends could pose health threats in the coming decades, particularly for children and adolescents whose bodies are still developing and who will face prolonged exposure to elevated CO2 levels.
