Ato develops radio-style AI assistant for older adults

Consumer technology startup Ato and industrial design studio Boostep have developed a screen-free, tabletop AI assistant designed specifically for older adults. The device, styled like a retro domestic radio, utilizes physical controls such as a large volume knob and a bright orange push button to facilitate spoken interactions, bypassing the need for complex touchscreen menus.

Family members can manage the device via a smartphone app to send voice notes and schedule reminders, which the user receives through speech. The unit also provides proactive daily check-ins, streams radio, and offers spoken information. To ensure privacy, Ato states it does not retain raw audio recordings or share conversation transcripts with family members.

The hardware is approximately 5.5 inches tall with a cream-colored housing and a woven front panel. It requires a USB-C connection and Wi-Fi to operate. While the device is not a certified medical tool and cannot make emergency calls, it is intended to provide companionship and ease of communication. Pre-orders are priced at $179, with deliveries expected in February 2027. An optional annual subscription of $249 is available for unlimited conversational dialogue.
