ATO employee charged with leaking info to organised crime
An Australian Taxation Office (ATO) employee has been charged following an investigation into the alleged leak of sensitive information to organised crime associates. The 32-year-old man, an APS4-level official, is accused of using his position to disclose information obtained through his role as a Commonwealth public official.
During a joint investigation involving the Australian Federal Police (AFP), the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), and the ATO, authorities executed a search warrant at a property in Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast. The raid resulted in the seizure of multiple electronic devices, including mobile phones, which are undergoing forensic examination.
In addition to the disclosure charges, investigators allege they identified child abuse material on the seized devices. The man faces two counts of unlawful disclosure of information, two counts of possessing child abuse material, and 15 counts of using a carriage service for child abuse material. He has been suspended from his position without pay and is scheduled to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on September 21.
