Atokos island becomes viral tourist destination for swimming pigs

The small, private Greek island of Atokos in the Ionian Sea has become a viral tourist sensation due to its herds of Mediterranean black pigs. After images and videos of the animals went viral on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, thousands of visitors have begun flocking to the island to swim alongside and feed the docile pigs.

Tour operators, such as Renato Bisha, provide daily excursions from nearby Ithaca, with additional trips organized from Lefkada and Kefalonia. The pigs, which often enter the sea to cool off, have become accustomed to human presence. The phenomenon has led to the island being colloquially referred to as ‘Piggy Island’ by travelers and locals alike.
