Atom integrates Coinbase x402 protocol for AI agent domain purchases
Atom, a premium domain marketplace operated by AtomHQ, has integrated Coinbase Business to enable AI agents to autonomously search for and purchase domain names. Using the x402 payment protocol on the Base blockchain, AI agents can complete transactions using stablecoins such as USDC and USDT.
The integration utilizes a machine-to-machine payment design that allows software to handle purchases within a single workflow. The process follows an authorize-and-capture model similar to traditional credit card transactions: the agent finds a domain, presents the terms to the buyer for approval, and signs a payment authorization. Payment is only captured once the domain registration is successfully completed.
A key feature of the x402 protocol is its ability to facilitate gasless payments via the EIP-3009 standard. This allows for efficient micropayments by enabling users to authorize transfers with a signature while avoiding the need to pay network fees in a native blockchain currency. This capability is particularly relevant for small transactions where standard network fees might otherwise exceed the purchase price.
