ATP announces major 2028 reform to boost player pay and ranking structure

The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) has announced a major strategic overhaul, titled ‘OneVision’, set to take effect in 2028. ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi introduced the plan to address growing concerns regarding player workload and frequent injuries among top stars like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

A central pillar of the reform is a massive increase in player compensation. The ATP aims to raise total player compensation—excluding Grand Slam prize money—to a projected $350 million. This includes increasing the bonus pool from $21.5 million to $50 million, providing $25 million for players finishing in the top 250, and allocating approximately $30 million annually for pension benefits for 300 players.

The reform also targets the ranking system and tournament calendar. To reduce the pressure on players to participate in excessive tournaments to recover lost points, the ATP plans to give greater weight to results at major events. Specifically, the rule allowing players to replace three poor Masters 1000 results with better performances in 500 or 250 series tournaments would be abolished. The calendar will also be restructured with dedicated weeks for specific tournament categories, incorporating a new tenth Masters 1000 tournament in Saudi Arabia.
