ATP plans major cut to men's doubles prize money and draw sizes

The ATP is preparing a reform package, dubbed “Product 28”, that would drastically reshape men’s doubles on the tour beginning in 2028. Under the plan, the share of prize money allocated to doubles could be reduced from roughly 20% to 10% of the total pool, while draw sizes would be halved – from 32 to 16 pairs at ATP Masters 1000 events and from 16 to 8 pairs at 500 and 250‑level tournaments. The governing body argues that singles generate the bulk of revenue and that the reallocation would make lower‑ranked singles players more financially viable.

The proposal has triggered a swift backlash from doubles specialists. Around 50 players gathered at Wimbledon, with French former world No. 6 doubles finalist Édouard Roger‑Vasselin leading the criticism, saying the cuts would jeopardise the livelihoods of specialists and undermine the discipline’s future. Players contend that the ATP has historically under‑invested in promoting doubles and is now using that neglect to justify the reductions.
