ATP proposes ranking and calendar reforms for 2028
ATP President Andrea Gaudenzi has introduced proposals to reform the professional tennis ranking system and reorganize the tournament calendar starting in 2028. The initiative aims to strengthen competition, align incentives, and support player development while reducing the pressure on athletes to play excessive matches.
One key proposal involves modifying the ranking points system. Currently, players can replace up to three of their worst Masters 1000 results with better performances in ATP 500 or ATP 250 tournaments. The ATP intends to eliminate this mechanism to prevent players from overextending themselves to gain points.
These changes have raised concerns regarding the future of smaller tournaments, such as the Argentina Open. As the circuit moves toward prioritizing higher-value events like Grand Slams, ATP Finals, and Masters 1000, there are questions about whether ATP 250 events will struggle to attract top-tier players.
