Atri faces declining primary school enrollment despite strong secondary sector

Atri is experiencing a divergence in its educational demographics. While the city remains a regional hub for higher education, hosting approximately 1,600 students in its secondary schools, there is a notable decline in primary and early childhood enrollment.

Data indicates that first-cycle school enrollment in Atri is projected to drop from 820 students in the 2024/25 academic year to 775 by 2026/27, representing a 5.5% contraction. This trend contrasts with neighboring Notaresco, which saw its student numbers recover after an initial dip. Local political figures, including Livio Nespoli of Sinistra Italiana, suggest that while the decline is linked to broader demographic trends like low birth rates, the city's ability to retain families is a critical concern.

Concerns have also been raised regarding the adequacy of facilities, such as those in Fontanelle, which may impact the territory's attractiveness to families with young children.
