ATSI discusses internet quota compensation and Mobile Number Portability challenges

The Indonesian Association of Telecommunications Providers (ATSI) is developing compensation schemes for customers regarding expired internet quotas. This follows a circular letter from the Ministry of Communication and Digital regarding consumer protection. Marwan O. Baasir, Chairman of ATSI, stated that discussions have been ongoing for a month. The protection aims to cover both rollover and non-rollover data products, ensuring that even customers with non-rollover packages receive benefits as per current regulations.

Potential compensation options being considered include extensions of active periods—such as an additional three days before data expires—or the provision of points that can be used for extra quota or lottery programs. These protections will apply to both prepaid and postpaid customers, though implementation will take time as operators adjust business models and billing systems.

Separately, ATSI has highlighted that implementing Mobile Number Portability (MNP) in Indonesia would require fundamental changes to the national telecommunications architecture. Marwan O. Baasir noted that the transition involves significant shifts in technology, investment, regulation, and infrastructure. He pointed out that Indonesia's current numbering system, which distinguishes between fixed and cellular networks, presents a unique challenge compared to centralized systems used in countries like Australia.
