Atsuro Watabe discusses role in NHK drama Blossom

Actor Atsuro Watabe has shared his perspective on his role as Seiji Hayano in the NHK morning drama series ‘Blossom’. The series is inspired by the life of writer Uno Chiyo and follows the growth of the protagonist, Tama, played by Shizuka Ishibashi.

Watabe portrays Seiji, the eldest son of the prominent Hayano Brewery who chose not to inherit the family business. His character is described as a strict and complex figure who maintains a harsh discipline over his family. Regarding the portrayal, Watabe stated he is prepared for viewers to perceive the character as a ‘terrible father,’ noting that the freedom of interpretation is a strength of film and drama.

Despite the character's severity, Watabe emphasized that Seiji is a compelling individual with a strong desire to protect those around him. He expressed admiration for his co-stars, praising Ishibashi’s emotional balance and Ryoko Kuninaka’s presence. Watabe hopes that viewers can sense the deep affection existing within the Hayano family despite their difficult dynamics and that the series provides strength to its audience.
