Tesla reports declining net profit despite strong cash flow

Tesla reported a 43% year-over-year decline in net profit for the third quarter, falling to $787 million. While total revenue remained relatively stable at approximately $28.05 billion, the company faced pressure from its automotive and energy divisions. Automotive revenue decreased by 3% to $20.56 billion, and energy-related revenue dropped by 16% to $2.88 billion.

Despite the drop in profitability, Tesla surprised analysts by generating a positive free cash flow of $1.53 billion, significantly exceeding expectations of a multi-billion dollar deficit. This was partly attributed to capital expenditures of $4.73 billion being lower than anticipated.

The company is heavily pivoting toward artificial intelligence, robotics, and autonomous driving. Full Self-Driving (FSD) subscriptions grew by 67% to 1.74 million. CEO Elon Musk has also highlighted the potential for a merger with SpaceX and the long-term importance of the Optimus humanoid robot and Cybercab robotaxi services.
