Attaullah Tarar addresses Afghan stability and water security
Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar, has addressed critical regional issues concerning Afghanistan and the Indus Waters Treaty. Speaking at an event in Islamabad, Tarar emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to a peaceful resolution regarding Afghanistan but urged the Afghan interim government to move away from a military mindset and act as a responsible state. He expressed concern over alleged safe havens for terrorists in Afghanistan, noting that regional stability depends on resolving these security issues.
Tarar also highlighted the importance of Afghanistan’s geography in connecting Central Asian countries to Pakistani ports like Karachi and Gwadar, which could foster regional economic cooperation.
On the subject of water security, Tarar stated that while Pakistan desires peace, water cannot be used as a weapon. He defended the Indus Waters Treaty, asserting that international agreements cannot be unilaterally suspended or delayed. He noted that the Prime Minister has previously communicated to the United Nations that blocking Pakistan’s water would be considered an act of war, emphasizing that water is vital to the nation’s agriculture and economy.
