Ukrainian commander Ihor Obolenskyi survives assassination attempt

President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that an attempt to assassinate Ihor Obolenskyi, commander of the Khartiia Brigade of Ukraine's National Guard, was foiled. The attacker and an accomplice were detained; the main suspect is a 69‑year‑old man from Kharkiv. Ukrainian investigators say he was recruited by Russian intelligence services that pretended to be agents of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and was persuaded that Obolenskyi was a traitor. A Makaro pistol and ammunition were recovered at the scene, but the weapon failed to fire, preventing the killing. Zelensky said procedural measures are underway and pledged that Ukraine will respond to the attack. The incident comes amid a series of recent hostile actions in Ukraine, including car explosions in Odesa and other attempted attacks on military personnel.
