Attica Governor Nikos Chardalias Defends On‑Site Firefighting Efforts

Regional Governor of Attica Nikos Chardalias said he has spent the past 36 hours continuously on the ground with deputy governors, civil‑protection officials and hundreds of staff, supporting fire‑fighting operations in the region’s recent wildfires. He highlighted the presence of his teams at key hotspots such as Poikilo Oros, Porto Germano and the Psatha front, working alongside firefighters, volunteers and municipal forces.

Chardalias rejected criticism that he was absent from the media, stating that during emergencies his priority is to be “in the field, not on TV or radio”. He noted that the regional response is coordinated through the Unified Coordination Center for Operations and Crisis Management (ESKEDIK) and the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, deploying 53 water‑tankers, 11 project machines and dozens of vehicles for rescues, de‑blocking and suppression. He pledged that the region will remain on‑site until the last fire is extinguished and will continue to support recovery and re‑forestation efforts.
