Greece tax authorities intensify audits in tourist regions

The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) is intensifying tax audits across Greece's tourist hotspots ahead of the August 15 peak season. Authorities are targeting sectors with high tax risks, including taverns, cafes, beach bars, accommodation providers, and vehicle rental companies.

Audits are increasingly driven by risk analysis using digital data from myDATA, POS transactions, and VAT declarations, rather than random selection. A significant portion of these enforcement actions is fueled by citizen reports. Through the Appodixi application, approximately 225,551 complaints have been submitted, with over 102,000 being named. These reports primarily concern the non-issuance of receipts, the use of fake receipts, or the failure to transmit transaction data to the tax system.

Additionally, the citizen complaint platform has received over 97,000 reports. Enforcement efforts are particularly focused on the Cyclades, Dodecanese, Crete, and the Ionian Islands. Recent data from July showed a violation rate of approximately 37.42% in audited businesses, with significant fines and temporary closures being imposed on non-compliant establishments.
