Greece electricity wholesale prices hit 2026 high

Wholesale electricity prices in Greece have surged to a new 2026 high, reaching 211.76 euros per megawatt-hour on Tuesday, September 22. This represents a significant increase compared to August levels and a 177.63% rise compared to the same day last year.

The price volatility is particularly acute during evening hours. As solar energy production decreases, the reliance on natural gas units—which comprise approximately 33% of the energy mix—drives prices up to 340.89 euros per megawatt-hour. Despite renewable energy sources accounting for 47.72% of the production mix, the market remains sensitive to international natural gas price fluctuations.

For the month of September, the average wholesale price has hovered around 160 euros per megawatt-hour, a 20% increase from August. This upward trend is causing concern for households and businesses as they prepare for the winter season. Energy suppliers are expected to announce new retail rates for October in the coming week, which will determine how much of this wholesale cost is passed on to consumers.
