Attica Region implements €250 million flood protection plan
The Attica Region is undertaking approximately 30 flood protection projects with a total budget of €250 million. Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias is implementing a strategy that combines prioritizing needs, restoring problematic areas, and the systematic maintenance of the stream network to combat the risks posed by climate change.
Currently, seven projects with a budget of €28.87 million have signed contracts, with additional works planned for areas such as Galatsi and Penteli. The initiative aims to move from planning to practical application by addressing long-standing bureaucratic delays.
However, geological expert Michalis Diakakis warns that Attica remains highly vulnerable due to its high concentration of infrastructure and socio-economic activity. He notes that while many projects exist, they consist of a mix of old and new interventions that may not suffice during extreme weather events. The high percentage of impermeable surfaces in the densely built urban fabric further complicates water absorption and safe runoff.
