Attila Ágh analyzes the political decline of Fidesz and MSZP

Political scientist Attila Ágh has analyzed the decline of Hungary’s major political parties, noting that both Fidesz and MSZP have lost their connection to European political processes.

Ágh suggests that MSZP failed to establish itself as a prepared opposition party capable of representing Western European social democratic values. He attributes this to leadership errors, a focus on privatization over democratic institution-building following the regime change, and the social crises of 2006.

Regarding Fidesz, Ágh describes the party as having built a ‘one-man empire’ that has hindered national development. He notes that in such an authoritarian system, political protection has become a fundamental element of the regime, leaving those tied to the power structure vulnerable should that protection cease.
