Attorney General Jorge Messias defends Federal Police Director at STF

Attorney General Jorge Messias has assumed the defense of Federal Police Director-General Andrei Rodrigues before the Supreme Federal Court (STF). The legal action follows a controversy involving an anonymous intelligence report regarding Minister André Mendonça, which was used in allegations of abuse of authority. While Mendonça had previously ordered the preventive removal of Rodrigues and intelligence director Leandro Almada, that suspension was later revoked.

Messias stated that the AGU's representation of Rodrigues is a strictly technical and institutional duty to protect the acts of federal administration leaders. He denied reports of discomfort regarding the mission, despite political friction in Brasília following Rodrigues's initial attempt to hire private counsel.

Separately, Messias praised Supreme Court President Edson Fachin’s initiative to lift the secrecy surrounding investigations into the ‘Master Case’. Messias argued that transparency is a fundamental rule of the Republic, asserting that publicizing such investigations protects institutions and ensures equality of treatment for all involved. He also aligned this push for transparency with President Lula’s calls for greater openness regarding Banco Master investigations.
