Attorney testifies to Congress on fatal ICE shooting in Maine

Sean Murphy, an attorney representing the family of Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, testified before Congress on Tuesday regarding the fatal shooting of the 25-year-old Colombian man by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer. The incident occurred on July 13 at an intersection in Biddeford, Maine.

During the public forum, which was convened by Senator Richard Blumenthal and Representative Robert Garcia, Murphy stated that the only justification provided for the death was that it was in the interest of public safety. The family recently learned that one of the officer's bullets struck the car seat of Durán Guerrero’s young daughter.

The forum focused on recent fatal ICE shootings and what lawmakers described as abusive tactics by immigration officials. While multiple sources have identified the agent involved as David Brouillette, the Department of Homeland Security has declined to identify the officer.
