Attunga hay shed fire destroys hundreds of bales
A fire in a hay shed on the outskirts of Attunga destroyed hundreds of round hay bales on Wednesday morning, October 28. The incident was reported shortly before 6:00 am.
Three Rural Fire Service (RFS) brigades and Manilla Fire and Rescue attended the scene. Emergency responders were able to contain the blaze to the shed and remained on-site throughout the morning to monitor the smouldering pile and prevent flare-ups near a nearby haystack.
Authorities believe the fire was caused by spontaneous combustion. This occurs when moisture within the hay triggers biological and chemical reactions that generate enough heat to ignite the material.
