Au Kam San trial begins in Macau under national security law

The trial of pro-democracy activist and former legislator Au Kam San began on September 16, 2026, in Macau. The proceedings are being held behind closed doors at the Court of Final Appeal following a request from the Public Prosecutor's Office and confirmation from the Committee for Safeguarding National Security.

Au, a 69-year-old former teacher and long-serving legislator, faces charges of “subversion against the political power of the State” and establishing links with external entities to commit acts against state security. Under the subversion charge, he faces a potential prison sentence of up to 25 years. He has been in preventive detention since his arrest on July 30, 2025.

The trial marks the first case under Macau’s expanded national security laws, which were strengthened in 2023 to prevent foreign interference. These laws grant judges the authority to hold closed-door sessions and require judicial approval for the appointment of defense lawyers. Supporters of Au suggest the charges stem from his peaceful political activities and regular meetings with the European Union Delegation to Hong Kong and Macao.
