Auburn University opens $30 million defense research laboratory

U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville attended the ribbon cutting for Auburn University’s new $30 million Applied Research Institute laboratory in Cummings Research Park. The 50,000-square-foot facility is designed to accelerate defense and space technology, focusing on advanced manufacturing, rapid prototyping, and radiation-effects testing for space electronics to support missile defense and satellite systems.

During the event, Tuberville also addressed the expansion of data centers in Alabama. He noted that the state currently has approximately 20 data centers and expects roughly 10 more in the coming years, provided communities can secure necessary power contracts. Tuberville emphasized the significant tax revenue potential of these facilities, citing an ongoing project that could potentially bring $1 billion in annual tax revenue to a single city.

His comments come amid political debate regarding data center construction, with some opponents calling for moratoriums on new developments.
