AUCB graduates threaten legal action over certification dispute
Seventy-five final-year students at the African University of Communication and Business (AUCB) have threatened to take the institution to the High Court if their full academic records are not published within seven days. The dispute involves students from the 2022/2023 cohort who opted to receive University of Ghana (UG) certificates through AUCB’s affiliation program.
Legal representatives from Freshfields Law Consult allege that AUCB released two different graduation lists on October 6. The list for AUCB certificate recipients included index numbers, full names, departments, and degree classifications. However, the list for UG certificate seekers reportedly contained only names, omitting index numbers, cumulative grade point averages (CGPA), and degree classifications.
Co-counsel Sydney Antonio stated that the students are seeking transparency and consistency with previous cohorts who were able to ascertain their classifications before convocation. The lawyers argue that the current omission is discriminatory and could damage the academic standing of the affected graduates.
