Auchan Poland removes cage-grown eggs from store shelves

Auchan Poland has officially completed a multi-year process to remove fresh cage-grown eggs from its stores. As of September 1, the retailer no longer sells products from battery cages, offering instead litter, free-range, and organic alternatives.

This move follows a broader trend among major retailers in Poland, including Biedronka, Lidl, Żabka, Kaufland, Netto, and Aldi, which have also phased out cage eggs. According to the Open Cages Association, this transition is estimated to impact the lives of approximately 400,000 hens annually at Auchan alone.

Market data indicates a significant shift in consumer preference; a February 2026 study showed that over 77% of Polish consumers believe cage farming does not provide adequate conditions for animals. Since 2014, the market share of non-cage egg production in Poland has grown from 13% to nearly 40%.
