Auchertool data center proposal faces massive local opposition

A proposal to build the world’s second-largest data center near the village of Auchertool in Fife, Scotland, has met significant local opposition. The project, which would have a 600MW capacity, is expected to cover over 170 acres, a footprint larger than the village itself.

Residents have submitted more than 1,600 objections, citing concerns over environmental impacts, including potential temperature increases, flood risks, and noise frequencies. Protesters have expressed fears regarding the scale of the development and its impact on the local community.

Scotland is increasingly targeted for such infrastructure due to its abundant renewable energy and cool climate, which supports the UK’s broader AI strategy. However, the scale of opposition in Auchertool and other areas like Larbert may prompt the Scottish Parliament to consider stricter regulations or a moratorium on large-scale data center developments. New rules already require planning authorities to notify the government of any development exceeding 50MW.
