Auckland Council proposes planning changes to increase housing supply
Auckland Council is proposing changes to Plan Change 120 to increase housing capacity by enabling more intensive development near major centers and public transport infrastructure. The revised proposal focuses on areas with high access to jobs and services, including the city center, metropolitan and town centers, and rapid transit stations within 10 km of the city center.
Research utilizing the Auckland Housing Supply Model suggests that while enabling rules create development opportunities, actual housing supply depends on market demand and landowner willingness to redevelop. However, evidence from the Auckland Unitary Plan since 2016 indicates that more enabling planning rules have historically led to an increase in housing consents.
