Auckland Downtown Carpark Redevelopment Fast‑Tracked

The New Zealand government has granted fast‑track approval for the demolition of Auckland’s 7‑storey Downtown Carpark and its replacement with an integrated mixed‑use precinct. The plan, submitted by Precinct Properties New Zealand Limited in January 2026, includes a 55‑storey commercial office tower, a 162 m residential tower, a hotel, retail and food outlets, public civic spaces and an extensive laneway network. It is the 28th project approved through the Fast‑track process, with the independent expert panel noting that the tower design limits visual impact on the skyline. Conditions will address construction traffic and hotel pick‑up/drop‑off arrangements. Ministers Chris Bishop (Infrastructure) and Shane Jones (Regional Development) said the development will boost tourism, retail, hospitality and create jobs, and highlighted the partnership with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei.
