Roldanillo, Colombia, faces severe damage after earthquake FAST-MOVING

An earthquake in southwestern Colombia has caused severe destruction in the town of Roldanillo, a community of approximately 45,000 residents known for paragliding. While the nearby major city of Cali has access to large-scale rescue operations, smaller towns like Roldanillo are struggling to manage the crisis with limited external aid.

The local hospital in Roldanillo has been heavily impacted, with approximately 70 percent of the facility currently unusable. While the emergency room, operating rooms, and delivery rooms remain functional, the auditorium has been repurposed for inpatient treatment. Spokesperson Manuela Hernández Vargas stated that only the most urgent emergencies are being admitted for inpatient care.

Economic devastation is also widespread. Local authorities report that around 300 shops have been destroyed, a blow that could result in at least 1,500 people losing their jobs. The town center, characterized by buildings over 100 years old, has been reduced to rubble, leaving residents and hospital staff facing significant psychological distress and the threat of further structural collapses.
