Audi A8 may move production to Leipzig using Porsche platform

Reports indicate that the future of the Audi A8 may involve a significant shift in production and technical architecture to reduce costs within the Volkswagen Group. The next generation of the luxury sedan could potentially be manufactured in Leipzig, Germany, rather than its traditional home in Neckarsulm.

This move would align Audi with Porsche, as the new A8 is expected to share a technical platform with the future Porsche Panamera. Utilizing a shared platform is seen as a strategic way to manage development and production expenses amid declining sales in the luxury sedan segment.

Market data highlights the challenges facing the model; in Europe, sales for the A8 and S8 reached only 966 units by the end of August. In the United States, sales during the first half of 2024 saw a 31.5% decrease compared to the previous year. This decline reflects a broader consumer shift toward SUVs and crossovers over traditional large luxury sedans.
