Audi delays electric A4 e-tron production to 2029

Audi has announced that production of the all-electric Audi A4 e-tron is delayed until at least March 2029, pushing back the original mid-2028 target. The delay is attributed to technical difficulties with the Volkswagen Group’s Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), which is intended to be the successor to the MEB and PPE architectures.

A primary cause for the setback is a late-stage decision to upgrade the platform’s onboard electrical system from a 12-volt to a 48-volt standard. This change has required significant re-engineering across the Group and its supply chain. The A4 e-tron is intended to be one of the first models to utilize this new architecture, which also involves software development in collaboration with Rivian.

In a separate development, Audi has unveiled the new electric A2 e-tron. This model focuses on high efficiency with a drag coefficient of 0.24 and offers a range of up to 649 km (WLTP) using an 84 kWh battery. The A2 e-tron is expected to arrive in showrooms by December 2026.
