Audi CEO faces backlash after appearing with Donald Trump

Audi CEO Gernot Döllner is facing intense criticism from employees, unions, and German politicians following his appearance at a Donald Trump campaign event in Georgia. During the event, Döllner announced Audi's plan to invest approximately $4.2 billion to build its first U.S. manufacturing plant in Georgia, which is expected to produce 200,000 vehicles annually and create 4,500 jobs.

The appearance has sparked a governance crisis within the Volkswagen Group. Critics, including Volkswagen Works Council President Daniela Cavallo and the IG Metall union, argue that Döllner violated internal company guidelines that prohibit executives from making public political appearances during the three months preceding an election. This is particularly sensitive as the U.S. midterm elections are scheduled for November 3.

German Environment Minister Carsten Schneider also criticized the move, describing the investment in fossil-fuel-oriented vehicle production as betting on a ‘dead horse’ while the world shifts toward electromobility. Meanwhile, a YouGov survey of 2,725 adults in Germany revealed that 57 percent of respondents viewed the appearance as inappropriate.

In response to the internal controversy, Volkswagen reportedly disabled the comment function on its intranet and removed over 200 comments regarding the announcement, citing a loss of professional discourse.
