Audi CEO faces backlash after appearing at Trump campaign rally

Audi CEO Gernot Döllner is facing intense criticism in Germany following his appearance alongside U.S. President Donald Trump at a campaign event in Georgia. During the rally, Döllner announced Audi's plan to invest approximately $4 billion to build its first American manufacturing plant in the state, which is expected to produce 200,000 premium SUVs annually and create 4,500 jobs.

Critics, including German politicians and labor unions, have condemned the move as a violation of corporate political neutrality rules, particularly given the timing shortly before U.S. midterm elections. IG Metall president Christiane Benner described the appearance as “highly embarrassing, politically unacceptable and unworthy,” while Volkswagen works council chair Daniela Cavallo accused the leadership of becoming a “puppet” in a propaganda show.

Döllner defended his decision in a letter to employees, stating the move was made “solely in the interest of the company” to increase competitiveness in the North American market, where Audi's business is currently not profitable. He noted that the company was invited to present its plans alongside the President. Meanwhile, the announcement has heightened tensions regarding the future of Audi's German production sites, such as Neckarsulm, as the company seeks to offset declining sales in China and mitigate the impact of U.S. import tariffs.
