Audi closes Brussels factory as European auto industry faces job cuts

The European automotive industry is facing significant restructuring and job losses due to intense international competition and shifting market demands. Audi has closed its factory in Brussels, Belgium, which had been in operation for nearly 80 years. The closure follows a decline in demand for electric models, specifically the Audi Q8 e-tron and Q8 Sportback e-tron, with production dropping from previous highs of over 53,000 units to approximately 15,212 vehicles in 2024.

In addition to the Brussels closure, Audi plans to reduce its workforce in Germany by up to 7,500 positions by 2029. This occurs alongside broader industry trends; the Volkswagen Group has reportedly announced plans to eliminate approximately 100,000 jobs by 2030 to ensure long-term sustainability and profitability. Similarly, Jaguar Land Rover has announced a restructuring plan that includes cutting 4,000 jobs globally over the next two years to increase competitiveness and invest in electrification and digital technologies.
