Audi confirms 2028 launch of A4 e‑tron with zonal electronics and physical controls
Audi has confirmed that the A4 e‑tron will debut in 2028 as the first model built on Volkswagen Group's Scalable Systems Platform (SSP). The platform features a unified battery pack and a zonal electronic architecture developed jointly by Volkswagen and Rivian, which reduces wiring by grouping controllers into physical zones and allows over‑the‑air software updates. Inside, the vehicle will return to conventional physical buttons and rotary knobs, a move prompted by driver preference and upcoming Euro NCAP requirements.
The A4 e‑tron will also be offered in an Avant (station‑wagon) version, though battery capacity, range and power figures have not yet been released. Delays to the SSP mean other VW Group models are pushed back as well: the electric Golf is now expected around 2030, the ID. Roc will appear in the summer of 2028, while projects such as the Trinity series and Porsche’s K1 SUV have been postponed beyond 2030. Audi cited a claimed charging time of roughly twelve minutes from 10 % to 80 % charge, though this remains an unverified manufacturer estimate.
