Audi delays A4 e-tron launch until 2029 amid technical setbacks

The launch of the Audi A4 e-tron has been delayed until at least March 2029, according to reports from German media. This delay provides competitors such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz a significant advantage in the luxury electric sedan market.

The setback is attributed to technical challenges within the Volkswagen Group, specifically regarding the development of the next-generation Scalable Systems Platform (SSP). The SSP, intended to replace existing MEB and PPE architectures, is reportedly running approximately three years behind schedule due to technical issues and cost-cutting pressures. As a result, Volkswagen has scaled back the SSP program from eight planned variants to four.

Further complications arose after Audi CEO Gernot Dollner ordered a late-stage engineering shift to implement a 48-volt electrical architecture instead of the standard 12-volt system. This change required suppliers to redesign components and necessitated adaptations to the software codebase originally developed in partnership with Rivian.
