Audi F1 postpones 2026 engine upgrade to focus on 2027
Audi announced that it will not use the second power‑unit upgrade credit in the 2026 Formula 1 season, citing the sport’s cost‑cap regulations. Racing director Allan McNish said the team must balance spending on chassis and power‑unit development and cannot exhaust its budget in a single year.
The team introduced a modest, drivability‑focused update at the Spanish Grand Prix, which helped improve handling and earned points in the three races before the summer break. Nico Hülkenberg scored the team’s first points of the season, moving Audi up to eighth in the constructors’ standings.
Audi plans a major power‑unit package for the 2027 season, reserving larger hardware changes for that year. Honda confirmed it will follow the same strategy and also defer its second upgrade credit to 2027. Both manufacturers qualified for the higher tier of the ADUO programme, granting extra development tokens for 2026 and 2027.
