Audi evaluates future of iconic five-cylinder engine

Audi is evaluating the future of its iconic 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine in response to increasingly strict Euro 7 emissions regulations in Europe. While the engine has been a hallmark of the brand’s RS models for decades, its survival is challenged by the high investment required to meet new environmental standards.

Rolf Michl, head of Audi Sport, acknowledged the engine’s historical significance and stated that analyses regarding its future are ongoing. One potential solution to ensure compliance with Euro 7 standards is the integration of hybrid technology, a strategy previously utilized by Lamborghini to preserve its V12 engines.

The economic viability of the engine remains a concern due to the relatively low production volumes of models like the RS3 compared to the significant development costs. There has been speculation that expanding the engine's use to more models could improve its survival prospects, though no final decision has been made by Audi leadership.
