Audi to temporarily lend employees to defense companies

Audi is implementing a voluntary program to temporarily lend technical staff to the defense and aerospace sectors in Bavaria. This initiative aims to provide employment flexibility as the automotive industry faces structural challenges, including the costly transition to electric vehicles and intense competition in markets like China.

Under the program, employees such as engineers, project managers, and quality specialists can work for partner companies—including Airbus, MBDA, Diehl, and KNDS—for up to two years. While on assignment, workers remain officially employed by Audi, retain their existing collective agreement salaries, and receive additional allowances. The program also guarantees the right to return to Audi after the assignment ends.

This move comes as Audi plans to reduce its workforce by up to 7,500 positions by 2029. The labor union IG Metall has noted that the program is supported by a specific collective agreement and emphasized that employees must not face repercussions for declining the offer. Early internal interest in the program has reportedly exceeded the company's expectations.
