Audi recalls over 9,000 Q4 e-tron SUVs due to battery fire risk
Audi is conducting a voluntary recall of 9,048 Q4 e-tron and Q4 Sportback e-tron SUVs in the United States due to a potential battery fire risk. According to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the risk of “thermal propagation”—where heat spreads from cell to cell—increases when the battery charge level exceeds 80%.
The affected vehicles are 2024 and 2025 models manufactured between late November 2023 and April 2025. The problematic battery cells were produced at the SK On plant in Komárom, Hungary. Audi estimates that approximately 0.1% of the recalled vehicles, or about nine cars, actually possess the defect. While the company has not reported any fires, crashes, or injuries related to this issue, it is still investigating the root cause.
This recall follows a similar action by Volkswagen, which recently recalled over 22,000 ID. 4 models due to the same battery cell issue. Until a permanent remedy is developed, Audi advises owners to limit their vehicle's charge to a maximum of 80%. The company plans to notify owners by December 18.
