Audi begins production of the A2 e-tron in Ingolstadt

Audi has commenced production of the new A2 e-tron at its Ingolstadt plant in Germany. The vehicle marks the return of the A2 nameplate after 21 years, transitioning from its original internal combustion roots to a compact electric model based on the Volkswagen Group’s modular electric drive matrix (MEB).

Designed with a focus on efficiency, the A2 e-tron features a drag coefficient of 0.24. Depending on the configuration, the vehicle can achieve a consumption rate as low as 12.8 kWh per 100 km or a range of up to 646 km under the WLTP cycle. The model will be offered with various battery sizes and power outputs, with a starting price in Germany set at €38,200.

The production process at Ingolstadt has been optimized through several technical advancements. These include the “string-of-pearls” production principle, which reduces logistics complexity by determining customer order sequences six days before assembly. The facility has also implemented increased automation, such as robotic wheel assembly and “bin picking” technology, alongside the use of the “Edge Cloud 4 Production” industrial cloud to manage digital assembly lines.
