Audiencia Nacional warns of collapse due to rising drug trafficking cases
The Spanish Audiencia Nacional has warned of a judicial collapse caused by a significant surge in drug trafficking cases. The court's governing body noted that it is managing an extremely high volume of complex cases, many involving international ramifications, large numbers of suspects, and individuals in provisional detention.
According to the 2025 Prosecutor's Office report, drug trafficking procedures in Spain increased by 23.21% in a single year, rising from 23,949 in 2023 to 29,758 in 2024. The increase is particularly pronounced in cases involving high-gravity substances; cocaine-related cases rose by 53.59%, from 8,427 to 12,943.
The court highlighted that the Central Instruction Court is struggling with insufficient human and material resources to manage the workload within reasonable timeframes, exacerbated by high staff turnover and temporary appointments. The most significant growth is seen in serious organized crime offenses affecting multiple provinces.
