Audio Cassette Revival Boosts Physical Music Sales Amid Rock Reissue Trend

In the post‑COVID era, rock music’s commercial performance is being driven by reissued albums: 20 of the 25 best‑selling rock albums on Billboard’s 2024 chart are re‑releases, highlighting a shift toward older titles.

At the same time, audio cassettes are experiencing a modest resurgence in the United Kingdom. According to the Official Charts Company, cassette sales reached roughly 164,000 units in 2025, a 53 % increase over the previous year after a dip in 2024. While still far behind vinyl’s 7.5 million units sold, cassettes have transitioned from mass‑market product to collector’s item, with major artists such as Taylor Swift, Robbie Williams and others issuing limited‑edition releases on the format.
