Auditor General reports destruction of public records

Auditor General Maria Rodriguez has raised serious concerns regarding the destruction of public records by government officers. Rodriguez reported that some officials are not merely failing to produce financial documents, but are actively shredding them, sometimes while audits are actively in progress.

Rodriguez noted that such actions violate regulations, which state that only the accounting general is authorized to approve the destruction of records. She highlighted a specific instance at the Golden Haven Rest Home where a supervisor destroyed documents during an audit. The Auditor General emphasized that all records are important and that many must be maintained for up to forty-five years, suggesting that the current incidents stem from weak internal supervision and a lack of consequences within the public service.
