Van Heemstra, a Dutch aristocrat, reportedly maintained a strict upbringing for Hepburn but worked manual jobs, such as scrubbing floors, to fund Hepburn’s ballet education. In a 1989 interview with Barbara Walters, Hepburn noted that her mother’s severity influenced her character, fostering a selfless attitude of thinking of others before oneself.
