Audrey Niffenegger releases sequel to The Time Traveler’s Wife

Audrey Niffenegger has released “Life Out of Order,” the sequel to her 2003 bestselling debut, “The Time Traveler’s Wife.” The new novel follows Alba DeTamble, the daughter of the original protagonist Henry DeTamble.

Alba suffers from Chrono-Displacement Disorder, causing her to slide unpredictably between different timelines, decades, and versions of herself. The narrative explores her struggle to find meaning and love while navigating a fragmented existence. Central to her conflict is a romantic dilemma between two men: Zach, who cannot follow her through time, and Oliver, who shares her condition.

The book utilizes a complex structure where chapters include specific dates and ages, though these markers function differently for time-traveling characters who may exist in multiple ages simultaneously. The story serves as a reflection on memory and the importance of presence amidst temporal instability.
