Aughinish Alumina linked to Russian missile supply chain by Ukrainian agency
The Economic Security Council of Ukraine (ESCU) has raised concerns regarding the supply chain of Aughinish Alumina, a major industrial facility located in County Limerick, Ireland. An analysis by the Kyiv-based agency suggests that raw materials produced at the site may be linked to the manufacturing of Russian cruise missiles.
By examining supply lines and leaked Russian tax documents, researchers claim to have found evidence that alumina from the Limerick plant could be reaching factories that produce gyroscope units for missiles used against Ukrainian targets. These gyroscopes are manufactured using aluminium alloy.
The Aughinish facility is operated by Rusal, a company with links to Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska. The ESCU report indicates that the alumina produced in Ireland may be smelted into aluminium for Russian military use, which would constitute a breach of existing sanctions. The agency suggests this evidence could be used to justify further sanctions against Rusal to control the flow of refined alumina.
