Aughinish Alumina plant faces EU sanctions debate as Ireland seeks to protect exports

Limerick Mayor John Moran welcomed a government report that found no breach of EU sanctions at the Aughinish Alumina plant and called for a forum to unite the plant’s management, unions and suppliers. He urged the Irish Government to lobby powerfully at EU level to prevent any sanctions from being applied, arguing that “powerful forces seem to be ranged against Aughinish”.

The Irish state’s review concluded there was no evidence that alumina exported from Aughinish directly supports Russia’s military effort, but the inquiry remained inconclusive about broader economic ties. Internal reports suggest that EU sanctions could severely jeopardise the plant’s long‑term viability and cause collateral damage to Western industry. Politicians in Dublin warn that punitive measures must avoid self‑defeating consequences for the Irish economy and for European industrial supply chains.
