Augsburg City Hall reopens after two-year renovation
The historic Augsburg City Hall has reopened to the public following a two-year renovation process. The project, described by city officials as the most extensive since the post-WWII reconstruction, focused on modernizing the second-floor meeting areas, which included the removal of asbestos and the restoration of ceilings and floors using historical models and natural stone.
A central feature of the reopening is the Golden Hall, a Renaissance masterpiece known for its gold-leaf decorated ceiling. To celebrate the reopening, the city announced that the hall will be open for free visitation through Sunday, October 4.
Prior to the official reopening, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel attended a ceremony in the Golden Hall to receive the Elisabeth Prize from the Augsburg Caritas Association, honoring her commitment to social cohesion.
